Quiltcon 2016

Jane and I attended Quiltcon 2016 this past February in beautiful Pasadena, California and all I can say is "WOW!" Quiltcon is presented by the Modern Quilt Guild and it is four fun-filled days of demos, vendors, suppliers, classes and, of course, a multitude of quilts. 

You can gain an appreciation of all that was offered by visiting their 2016 site at this site. Although the event is over, the web site will show you what was going on and by clicking HERE you can see what is planned for 2017 in Savannah, Georgia on February 23 to 27, 2017. Several of us have already booked our hotel for 2017 and are anxiously awaiting the opening of registration for 2017. 

Neither Jane nor I have been to the huge quilt shows so it is difficult to compare this one to others like Houston however, I have been told that Houston is too big, too many people, too much to see. I don't know if I would consider that a problem or not, but I can see how it could be overwhelming. Quiltcon was not overwhelming, it was manageable and fun. I took three classes, one was a full-day and the other two were half-day and although I enjoyed the full-day class (with the wonderful Amy Smart), I think I will take only half-day classes next year which will allow more time for seeing the quilts and shopping the vendors.

Okay, enough of me typing - on with the photos and I will warn you, there are a lot of photos!  For that reason, I am not going to comment on each photo, I'll just let you enjoy! 

 So are you saying "WOW!" now too? I hope so!

The sewing continues!

We have been busy completing many projects! It feels SO good when a project is complete and we can share it and enjoy the feeling of completion - and then BAM, we start something new!

This is Judy's quilt - it was a kit from guess who? Connecting Threads of course! The quilting was just completed by Carmen - the finished quilt looks great!

We celebrated Cheryl's birthday with a delicious cake - Happy Birthday Cheryl!(and thanks to Carole for always picking up the cakes!)

These are my first two blocks of a Pat Sloan Block of the Month program that is happening on-line. The program started in January and each month for 10 months, the directions for a block will be released. It's not too late to join - check out Pat Sloan on Facebook for all the information. 

These colourful log cabin blocks are the 'filler' blocks for Myrtle's Block of the Month - they are going to look lovely when finished!

Cheryl is putting her blocks together for her Orion Star quilt using Thangles .... beautiful colours! 

Carole is working with pretty pastel fabrics - very nice!

 Here is Judy's quilt - as you can see, she has put a couple of rows together ... very pretty!

I made two table toppers (60 degree table topper) out of this bee hive striped fabric - each topper is the inverse of the other. I kept one and sent one to my quilter friend, Lynne, in Australia. 

Carole brought in two older quilts to show us - this first one belongs to her daughter and was made by Carole's grandmother. It needed a little repair work and is good as new now. 

This second quilt is one that Carole started decades ago and she pulled it out and finished it; good job Carole!

Jane and I went to Quiltcon click here in Pasadena, California, the end of February and we had an AMAZING time! So, the next post on this blog will be all about our Quiltcon experience  - and I will include the link to the 2017 Quiltcon which will be held in Savannah, Georgia, so stay tuned!!!

Lots of photos to share with you today!

Everyone has been very busy finishing UFOs (unfinished objects) and eagerly starting new projects. It's funny how the new fabrics call to you while you are in the midst of 3 or 4 other projects - and the new fabric always looks so much more interesting than the fabric you have been working with for a month or more!

Without further ado, here come the photos!

This is Faye 2 with a block from the kit she ordered from Connecting Threads (check their website HERE! We all love shopping at Connecting Threads, great quality and prices). 

The pattern is called "Star Crazy" ..........

...and it involves LOTS of cutting but it will be beautiful!

Here is Faye 1 with a completed quilt top; very lovely in black, white, silver, gray!

Judy is ironing her squares - it is another quilt kit from Connecting Threads, lovely browns!

It looks like Carmen is working on some bow ties and ...

..she has some beautiful graduated pink fabric that will make a beautiful heart quilt. 

Cheryl is practicing how she is going to put together her Block of Month quilt - love the blue colour with all the blacks and whites!

Jane is hard at work ...... on something! Sorry Jane, I don't remember what you were working on but I'm sure we'll see the progress in a later post!

This is Karen! She is our newest member and she is working on a table runner, looking good Karen!

Myrtle is working on her Block of the Month with a lovely turquoise fabric to add contrast - gorgeous!

I made some doggie panties - something I never thought I would be making! My family and I are pug sitting two of our breeder's pugs and the little female, Coco, has gone into heat. With any luck, Coco and Carter will be parents in a few months!

Carole showed us her strip quilt - she used fabric foundation for the back of the blocks and it shows how good combining different fabrics can look. Good job!

And we say Goodbye to 2015

Our second quilting day in November saw us trying to finish up Christmas projects and tie up loose ends.

This quilt tag was from a table topper exchange hosted by Quilting Gallery - Carole's partner attached it to Carole's table topper. It appears that she had a stamp made with her name and used card stock to make a tag - what a great idea!

 

And this is the table topper Carole received - lovely colours  - along with other 'quilty' goodies! I joined the Quilting Gallery exchange a couple of years ago and have 'met' lovely quilters from around the world. I highly recommend it!

This is Carole's completed Origami Christmas tree that was a workshop hosted by our large guild. The bells and balls make it so pretty!

 



A table topper/wall hanging/ lap quilt made and quilted by Carole - doesn't blue and brown look so good together? Great job!

 

This is my Origami Christmas tree - just need to add the gold balls. 

At lunch we celebrated Myrtle's birthday with a delicious cake - Happy Birthday Myrtle!

 

This lap quilt is Cheryl's and if I'm not mistaken, it may be for charity. Very nice!

Judy is working on a purse from a pattern she purchased when a few of us went out to Stony Plain and Spruce Grove - beautiful fabric choice!

Jane is working on two-colour disappearing four-patch placemats - good colours!



 

Cheryl made a Christmas table runner using a sashed disappearing 4-patch - very lovely! 

 

 

 

And another gorgeous table topper from Carole - she also quilted it - stunning!
